The 6 AI apps that I can not live without as an Instructional Designer

Posted 20 September 2024 by Katie Leah

(and Why They’re My New Best Friends)

As an instructional designer, I often manage ideation, content creation, and learner engagement simultaneously. To maintain productivity and efficiency, I heavily rely on AI applications. These tools have not only streamlined my workflow but also empowered me to handle complex tasks with ease, becoming indispensable in my daily routine.

 ChatGPT: The Idea Machine

ChatGPT, yeah, I know, how boring – but for ideation, misconception prompts, and fleshing out content, there’s no better. It’s like having a brainstorming buddy who’s always available, never gets tired, and doesn’t judge my coffee addiction. Need to whip up a catchy introduction? ChatGPT’s got your back. Stuck in a creative rut? ChatGPT to the rescue.

Veed.io: The Video Whisperer

Ah, Veed.io – my secret weapon for video production. Got background noise in your video? Gone. Not looked at the camera? Fixed. Veed.io can move your eyes to look at the camera – who needs a teleprompter anymore? Another cool trick up its sleeve is creating TikTok vertical videos from our longer content. Because let’s face it, who has the time to edit separate videos when AI can do it for you?

ID Assist: The Instructional Designer in your pocket.

ID Assist is a gem of a tool. Want to train your staff to think like an instructional designer or not sure where to start? This Chrome add-on is pure gold. It’s like having a mini-me that helps colleagues understand the intricate world of instructional design without my constant nagging.

Edpuzzle: The edutainment expert

Videos are always a point of contention – do learners pay attention? Do they like videos? Well, Edpuzzle’s AI creates activities based on the content, making sure learners are not just passive watchers but active participants. It’s like turning every video into an interactive adventure. And the best part? No more guessing if your audience is actually learning something or just pretending to watch.

GrammarlyGO: The Wordsmith’s Sidekick

Words, words, words – as an instructional designer, they’re our bread and butter. GrammarlyGO has learned our style and helps us with all our lovely SPAG. Need to draft an email, tweak some content, or polish a report? GrammarlyGO makes sure we sound smart and polished, every single time.

Typeform: The Feedback Guru

Want to get feedback from learners with actionable insights? Look no further than Typeform. It’s a great tool that turns boring questionnaires into engaging, interactive experiences. Plus, it’s great for getting those much-needed insights without the usual survey fatigue. The result? Happy learners and valuable feedback, all thanks to a bit of AI magic.

Laptop with design

So there you have it five AI applications that significantly enhance my work as an instructional designer. These tools assist in managing the intricate aspects of my job, allowing me to concentrate on creating high-impact learning experiences after all that’s what us ID’s are here for. If you haven’t explored these tools yet, I highly recommend giving them a try to elevate your instructional design capabilities. Happy designing!

(ps. yes I did use GrammarlyGo and GPT to help write this article)
